Frightful Fun

Halloween ashore, with a little mischief on the menu.

Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays.

Perhaps it’s because my birthday falls in early November, which meant that growing up, Halloween was just the beginning of a double celebration. Costumes, decorations, treats, and birthday festivities all arrived within days of one another. What’s not to love?

And unlike Thanksgiving and Christmas, which seem to arrive in an increasingly hurried blur, Halloween always felt like it had a little breathing room of its own. There was time to savor the pumpkins, the mysterious decorations, the crisp autumn air, and all those wonderful little things that make October feel magical.

Then, with Halloween properly celebrated, I could turn my attention to Thanksgiving and Christmas, with all their pleasures still waiting to be anticipated.

I’ve never understood the rush to skip ahead. Why not enjoy every bit of the season?

A Little Halloween Magic Ashore

One of my favorite things about having a coastal home is creating an atmosphere that feels welcoming, comfortable, and just a little unexpected.

And Halloween provides the perfect excuse to have some fun.

This year was no exception.

By day, the living room had taken on a festive personality of its own. A few well-placed decorations, seasonal touches, and a little imagination transformed an ordinary space into something delightfully spirited.

I love that decorating doesn’t have to mean elaborate productions or expensive purchases. Sometimes it’s simply about adding a few things that make people smile.

Of course, when the sun goes down on Halloween, the fun is only beginning.

A Freaky Foodie Evening

This year’s Halloween dinner was decidedly monstrous.

On the menu? A spooky turkey burger transformed into a rather alarming little creature, complete with melting fangs and creepy eyeballs.

Not exactly your ordinary burger night!

I love the idea of taking something as simple as dinner and making it part of the celebration. No complicated menu or hours spent in the kitchen. Just a little creativity, a sense of humor, and a willingness to play with your food.

And what better way to accompany a monster burger than a glass of something suitably spirited?

A Little Something to Sip

The drinking glasses received their own Halloween makeover.

With a quick wrap of gauze and a few wiggly eyes, ordinary glasses became miniature mummies, ready to serve up some festive “spirits” or a little “boo”ze.

Such a simple idea, but sometimes those are the ones I enjoy most.

A bit of gauze, a couple of googly eyes, and suddenly even the glassware has a personality.

Best of all, these little touches don’t require a decorating budget, a trip to a specialty store, or an entire afternoon of crafting.

Just a few minutes and a little imagination.

Making Room for a Little Whimsy

Whether I’m decorating a coastal cottage, entertaining friends, or finding new ways to make life aboard Sol Y Luna feel more personal, I keep coming back to the same idea.

A home should make you smile.

It should tell a little of your story, reflect your personality, and offer the occasional unexpected delight.

And sometimes, that means a perfectly respectable turkey burger sporting a pair of rather frightening fangs.

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Happy Halloween from ashore!

Here’s to celebrating every season, enjoying the little details, and never missing an opportunity to add a bit of whimsy to everyday life.
